MICOPERI Date: Feb. 85 - Dec. 90 Position: Information Management System (IMS) and organization department director
Italy MICOPERI was an offshore contracting company specialised in the installation of offshore drilling platforms. The company operate around the world with a fleet of 10 specialised crane vessels and about 2500 employees.
In 1987 a new giant vessel, the MICOPERI 7000 According to the company structure the IMS department responsibility was directed to the automation of administrative processes in the headquarters and to the field/ship operations. In this context the activity was dedicated to develop an Information Management System in the headquarters in Milan devoted to:
A specific central project control system for the administration of orders and subcontracts for the installation of the offshore platforms was also developed. These applications were used on the company VAXCLUSTER network with 60 terminals, 3 graphic Vaxstations and 10 PC connected. A total of six analysts and programmers were employed in the IMS and organisation department plus temporary staff. On board The MICOPERI/SAIPEM 7000 is a semisubmersible offshore vessel was designed to operate under heavy adverse sea conditions; it is equipped with a dynamic positioning system, class 3: using the DGPS network (which gathers information from 6 to 10 satellites every reading) and the combined action of twelve strategically placed screw engines; the computer control system can maintain the ship practically fixed on her position under wave and wind action. For the design and operation of the offshore installations, a range of hydraulic and meteorological parameters were required. These metocean conditions have been examined for different installation sites. Extreme conditions with return periods of 1, 10 and 100 years (per directional sector and omnidirectional) have been determined, comprising sea state, maximum wave height and associated period, tide and surge levels, maximum crest level, windspeeds and the total current velocity at various depths. The provided normal conditions included the annual and seasonal probability of exceedance of the significant wave height in each wave direction, the joint probability of significant wave height and mean wave period and the number of individual waves in each height/period and height/direction class. The joint probability of wind speed and wind direction and total depth-averaged current speed and direction have also been examined. Numerical procedures has been developed to analyse historical series of data and to pre-process information needed to the numerical models (SESAM). For the field/ships operations a data communication network to transmit ship/shore performance and daily progress data via satellite has been realised. A project management system based on OPEN PLAN was installed on board to permit the efficient and cost effective management of the offshore works. Other computer applications developed on board of the MICOPERI 7000 were dedicated to the personnel security and to the ship stock and inventory control.
Brazil & South Africa Procedures for administrative data collection and reporting to the headquarters were designed in a reduced version to be locally operated on PCs. This version has been subsequently installed and operators were trained at its use in the main MICOPERI offices of Rio de Janeiro and Capetown. |
